One of the three pricipal islands in the Maltese archipeligo, some 40 km south of Sicily in the heart of the Mediterranean sea, Gozo is a rural idyll just 16km by 7km, so you are always close to everything the island has to offer, including its stunning coastline. What many people don't realise is that these islands were a British colony until very recently, and the welcome is especially warm for the Bristish.
There's a red telephone box and post box in every town, all the road signs and business signs are in English, they drive on the left as we do and every house is fitted with UK style, 3-pin plugs. It makes a holiday here particularly relaxing but make no mistake, Gozo is most definitely 'abroad' and it's not just the weather and Mediterranean landscape that give it away. The fabulous local cuisine is influenced by neighbouring Italy and North Africa, fresh fruit and vegetables are grown in the traditional way and there's an excellent selection of good quality wine. The magnificent churches found in every village display Italian grandeur, whilst the style of house building and the names given to villages celebrates the culture and influence of Moorish rule and language. A truly cosmopolitan mix that's been developing for millenia to give you a perfect holiday destination.
