Villa holidays in Pons, Charentes - Overview
Pons is an impressive, fortified hill town with good access to many places of interest in the Charente Maritime area, as well being handy for the French west coast. The landscape of the Pons area is generally flat, wooded agricultural land until you reach the hills of the Vendee in the north.

Pons town has excellent facilities with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants, a handsome chateau and an inviting, pretty square with outdoor cafes. Nearby Jonzac is well known for its thermal baths - Les Thermes de Jonzac - and there is also a large swimming complex (Les Antilles de Jonzac) offering a wide variety of leisure activities. There is a beautiful chateau in the centre of the town.
Angouleme is the largest nearby town, a busy centre with good shopping, it also has an interesting old quarter and many restaurants. Worth visiting nearby to Pons is La Rochefoucauld. The chateau is reminiscent of the chateaux of the Loire and its Italianate grand courtyard is one of the finest in France. A few kilometres away from Pons, Lusignan has an ancient ruined castle said to have been built by the fairy Melusine. Angouleme lies at the head of the navigable part of the river Charente which flows along a wide valley from there, through Cognac, to the old Roman town of Saintes.
From Saintes, the river flows to its mouth just below Rochefort-sur-Mer. This is the area of marshland that runs along the coast known as the Marais, famous for its oyster beds. The town is also well known for its 300 years of ship building vividly recorded in the Corderie Royale (Royal Ropeworks Museum).
Each town or village in the Charente has a market on different days of the week, and there are numerous bric-a-brac and brocante (country antique stalls) from May until September. Music festivals, theatre and dance throughout the summer all add to the activities available in and around Pons.
