Porto Vecchio is a popular area of the island, considered to be the best for holidays in Corsica. Porto Vecchio is certainly Corsica's liveliest and most sophisticated resort.
Fortified by the Genoese, Porto Vecchio is a delightful hilltop town surrounded by vast, spectacular outcrops of pink granite, set above a marina often filled with luxury yachts. Open air cafes and restaurants overlook the old town square where a huge olive tree offers welcome shade. Side streets are lined with boutiques selling jewellery and trendy summer clothes creating a cosmopolitan atmosphere.

AOC Appellation Porto Vecchio is the local wine label and jolly good it is too. There are reasonable reds and the whites and roses are wonderful served chilled on a balmy Corsica summer evening.
Porto Vecchio is split into the old fortified town on the hilltop and the lower marina level by the water. Here you can enjoy a wide choice of restaurants, many offering seafood which the locals really know how to cook properly either grilled or oven baked. Red mullet, Seabass, Langoustines and Scallops are frequently on the menu, contrasting with the strong flavours of the hinterland, drawn from the herbs and berries of the 'maquis'.

Where can I find the best beaches in Corsica?
There are so many outstanding beaches around Corsica's 1000km coastline, you really are spoiled for choice. Most Corsica beaches are clean and lapped by clear, warm and inviting waters. However, most Corsican beaches do not have lifeguards (non-surveille) so visitors should take care in the sea. Corsica's best beaches and coves are often tucked away and unmarked, and if you're prepared to explore a little, then you won't be disappointed.
The most renowned beaches in the Porto Vecchio area are Palombaggia and Pinarello. Palombaggia is perhaps the most famous Corsica beach; lapped by azure blue waters its fine white sands a contrast to the red hue of the rocks. This beautiful Corsica beach is backed by pine trees that offer some shade during the heat of the summer, but it can be incredibly busy during July and August.
Porto Vecchio, Corsica - Diving
The Mediterranean sea around Corsica is warm and clear; it is perfect for a diving holiday and is home to a wide variety of sealife. Corsica lies within the French Cetacean Sanctuary which has the highest concentrations of whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean along with a vast array of flourishing marine life. Corsica also has many diveable wrecks with one site dating back 200 years and a number from the Second World War. In the bay of Porto Vecchio lies a large cruiser, apparently sunk by a drunken crew.

Corsica is an island of deep seated traditions with its own language in addition to French plus a rich mix of ethnic influences. The island's culture is reflected best in its music. Corsican chant is certainly unusual and atmospheric, the romantic guitar and mandolin ballads can be quite beautiful. More mainstream concerts take place throughout the summer and Porto Vecchio attracts many of the best singers and musicians.

Largely undiscovered until the 1950s, Corsica has a rich early history with archaeologist's recently uncovering many remarkable finds; such as Menhirs, prehistoric dwellings and relics from ancient Greece, Etruscan and Roman times. Whilst most of the major sites are further afield in Filitosa and Sartene, there are a number of lesser but fascinating sites around Porto Vecchio.
Porto Vecchio, Corsica - Out & About
Beautiful scenery is assured in and around Porto Vecchio, with wonderfully varied animal, bird, insect and plant life, some of which is unique and indigenous to Corsica. With over one third of Corsica's surface designated as national park, there are over 1,500km of paths for walkers. From Porto Vecchio there is easy access to the peaks of Bavella for some of the most scenic walks on Corsica island.

Corsica boasts one of the most spectacular golf courses in the world, the 18 hole international Golf de Sperone near Bonifacio, designed by Robert Trent Jones. We found it awesome just riding around the course on a buggy! There's also a 6-hole golf course at Porto Vecchio.
